I'd be happy with a single session GUI that updates the active service as soon as the save button was hit

I've resorted to running a continuous "RDP" session to my server using a local account. The issue with this is when someone decides to run a patch on the server and the server is restarted, Whatsup is not restarted. We run this on a terminal server, however locking the session is not an alternative as I have as many as 10 staff who need to use their own account to do things, and in Remote Desktop Admin Mode, one session active only allows another to be used. Ipswitch should be concentrating on allowing WUG to run as a service, but be able to run the local console to modify and update the service without having to stop it, and then causing the false alarms. Plenty of other apps can do this already, Steve -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, June 09, 2004 3:36 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [WhatsUp Forum] Running What's Up Gold as a service Rob, Understood, though if I didn't misunderstand the original poster the point was to make the application start, still have access to it (WUG applications) and have it be fairly secure. I presented the option of starting the WUG application in a terminal server session, not on the console. This keeps the console securely locked, and runs WUG in a terminal server session (away from colicky fingers and prying eyes). Someone else suggested VNC, which also uses the console access, which defeats the purpose of no console access. Someone please let me know if I am on the wrong track here. Then all you have to do is put a shortcut to WhatsUp in the startup folder. To set up autologin 1. From the command line, type "control userpasswords", (or for XP "control userpasswords2") 2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer check box and then click OK. 3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user name and password for the account you want to be log in as each time the computer starts. If you then want to automatically lock the desktop, add a batch file to the startup folder with the following command: rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation Bob Kent UITS Network Engineering University of CT -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, June 08, 2004 11:46 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [WhatsUp Forum] Running What's Up Gold as a service That is correct sir. The process looks something like this: 1.) Connect to the terminal server and log in. 2.) Open the WUG application and minimize. 3.) Disconnect (do not log "off") by doing START/SHUTDOWN, then choosing disconnect, or clicking the "x" on the terminal server window. 4.) Reconnect to make changes as needed, rinse, repeat... The only real disadvantage is that the WUG application cannot be automatically started on server reboot. It has been communicated that if any OS upgrade/changes require a reboot to the server are needed that the tech MUST follow the above process to restart the WUG application. -Ray -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of John Moore Sent: Tuesday, June 08, 2004 11:35 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [WhatsUp Forum] Running What's Up Gold as a service So if I understand you right you leave a terminal session logged in running WUG and just log in when you need to make changes? >>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 06/08/04 11:05AM >>> Hi, We have been running WUG in a terminal server session in Windows 2K for over 2 years now. This does several things for us. Allows remote administration of the application without resorting to the web interface <--yuk!. Allows the server console to be secured by not having a logged in user. On another note, I would love to see Ipswitch do a major overhaul of the WUG user administration. There is much room for improvement in that area such as User groups, "copy user" option, etc.. Ray Williams Broadband Data Engineer II Data Engineering, New England Cox Communications Inc. I seem to have better luck running it as a window app. Faster web response, easier to edit the maps, and several of my monitors work correctly, but I don't like leaving my server logged in.
