Bryan,

You could look at a "Reoccurring Email Notification" from WUG to your
blackberry, provided you're allowed email through your firewall.

Also, we have a touchtone operated IVR type interface for WUG which you call
anytime for a WUG status from any phone, this requires a voicemodem, but
only uses speech/tones no IP, so should be ok for your firewall guys to
ignore.

Subject: [WhatsUp Forum] More Blackberry Stuff

Just wondering... Due to corporate policy, I can't access WUG via the
firewall without VPN'ing in. I've been working on an SMS-based client
for Blackberries that works with WUG. Basically WUG sends out an SMS
everytime something goes up or down. This will mark the device green or
red in WUG. I then use recurring notifications to send up/downs on all
devices once an hour (a bit of overhead I know, but doesn't seem to be
causing any trouble) to update server lists on the device, just in case
we add servers. At least this way, the device will be no more than 1
hour behind. The only time this is a problem is if I add a server right
before I leave work, I know it'll be up to an hour before it's loaded
into the device's memory. *If anyone can come up with a better solution
when my only option is outgoing transmissions from the WUG server I'm
open to it* Possibly I could add a manual button on the website to send
out notifications to SMS devices immediately on an update, but that
wouldn't help any if the device is out of coverage for a time.

The main reason for hourly recurring SMS's of everything is in case I'm
out of range for a while, it will catch up rather quickly. I have about
5mins of lag if I'm out for 8hrs (at work, no reception in the
building), but it's not too bad to deal with.

1st question... would anyone else be interested in this kind of client
for other devices, such as cell phones that support openwave, palmos,
etc? It's all java-based so shouldn't be too hard to port over. If no,
then I'll spruce up to my liking and leave it there. If yes, I should
probably figure some way to market it, and what would you like to see in
such a remote client? Up/down of devices on a little bitty screen
obviously, but as far as report-type info with all of it? or just main
statistics? uptime/downtime/polls/last update/etc...

2nd question... Will this violate any type of WUG licensing or copyright
issues? It's all custom-written by myself. The only thing I use is the
name "WhatsUp Remote"... Wouldn't this be similar to customizing the web
interface for your own usage, then adding on to the price for say Value
Added Resellers? Needless to say the stock WUG web interface is a
little hard to look at... (no offense IPSwitch), so customizing it is
just natural. Just curious...
