That's how I'm doing it now... setting up an hourly recurring notification to SMS out status of every server. I wish WUG had some way to force an update out though, that way if I'm out of range for 8hrs at work, I don't get 8 x <number of servers monitored> SMS messages to my device.

Also, we have a touchtone operated IVR type interface for WUG which you call anytime for a WUG status from any phone, this requires a voicemodem, but only uses speech/tones no IP, so should be ok for your firewall guys to ignore.
