We use the LINK LINES feature to give us realtime indications on when a server goes down to let us know if it's the server or the router/switch port that is actually down without having to open the device properties in WUG (the red half of the line is what's down), or use the specific device tools that shipped with the device to investigate. The trick is having SNMP read capability into the servers and also having the servers MIB info up to date so you can see the NIC's listed.
I agree with a couple of others here, that having an Arch or Bezier line capability would be useful, but something I haven't seen requested yet and would be very useful, is I'd like to see some way of displaying what port a device is attached to when the LINK LINES feature is used. When you have a server farm on a L3 switch like a Nortel 8600, you could have literally hundreds of devices attached to it and when you need to unlink one of them, it becomes a guessing game if you made a mistake and clicked the wrong port number to link it to and didn't notice it until after it wasn't working the way you thought it should... It would also be very helpful to be able to identify redundant fail-over links coming from the same device to the same router/switch (they overlay each other and one of them becomes hidden) maybe something like the way Visio gives you several attachment points on a given icon which would allow some separation of the lines. ------------------------------------------------------------ Bryan Harrell, SPII Network Transport & Administration - Tallahassee Fla. Here's another. I'm interested in gathering end user stories on how you are using link lines (Map View Edit Mode: Right click on a device | Link To... Also seen in "Edit | Properties | Display | Display unconnected link lines as stubs"). What is the basic value you gain from this feature? Are you using it beyond interfaces on routers and switches? Feel free to respond to the list if you would like others to view and comment or feel free to just respond directly to me.
