Title: RE: [WhatsUp Forum] Service Mode v. Console Mode

Since WUG is so inexpensive, this is what I suggest to minimize downtime and maintain your maps.

  • Purchase 2 copies of WUG. One to run on your management server running as a service at all times. The other one to run on your workstation to make changes to maps as needed.
  • Make sure there is a share on your management server so that you can move maps between it and your workstation.
  • When you want to make a change, copy the map(s) to your workstation, disable polling on each of these maps (no need to poll from your workstation), and save changes once done.
  • Then through the web interface just “Unload” the maps on the management server with the names of the ones you just modified, copy the modified maps over, and “Load” the maps.

This will allow you to keep the service running, and only temporarily disable polling for the individual maps. Also, if it is timed just right, you might not even miss any polls.

As far as the #2 below, always make sure that Options > General > Resume previous device & service states when maps load is checked to prevent additional notifications for down devices.

Hope this helps!

1. The web page will be unavailable during the time between when you stop the service and when the app reinitializes and starts the web server again. And again when you shut down the console and restart the service.

2. All of your statuses get reset, so everything will be green when the app fist starts and then will go through the stages of down-ness all over again. And again when you restart the service. Also means that you get any alerts each time.

3. If you are doing any monitoring of servers in workgroups or other domains, you either have to log in with the account that the WUG service uses to make your changes, or get alerts and false downs from any servers that you don't have admin privileges on.

4. Ultimately, it's a bigger pain in the patoot than configuring your web accounts properly.

My $.02

Thanks for the replies to my previous question, I am new to the product and
really appreciate the feedback from those who have been using the product; I
find it much more useful then the User's guide (Which is not the best
written, I've seen) or from online FAQ's.  However, I will try not to abuse
this forum, too much.

My question today is:  I am looking over the option to run WUG as a service,
I read that if it is run as as service, any configuration changes must be
done via the Web Client.  I don't want to set up the security to let some
people configure maps via the web, and others only to view it.  So what is
to stop me from taking WUG out of Service Mode, when I need to edit a Map
and then returning it to service mode when I am done?

Thanks!
