I had the same problem and the only fix for me was to create an exchange e-mail 
user named Whatsup      .......... I was getting 501 Syntax Error prior to this.

Mike,

Try a space after the last " and before the < (just like it shows in
the From: header below). I used that format and it worked just fine
from WUP and at my mail client.
