I have not experienced this with WUP, but I have seen similar errors with other apps when my version of java on my machine doesn't quite gel. I have had to use different versions for different products from the same vendor, which I will not name here.
I think WUG version 8.x is an excellent product. I am going to hang in there for with WUG production and, wait in development with WUP simply because we have gotten a lot more out of WUG than the dollars we spent.
