Marty, I'm somewhat confused as to your description of the problem, so I wonder if maybe you too might be a bit confused! You see, an active monitor does not 'collect samples', it just reports up or down. Performance monitors are the ones that 'collect samples' and I have see that particular error message, for several minutes, after I've added a new Performance monitor to a device and view the graph for the new monitor. It can take 10 minutes (default) to collect the first 2 samples and only then does the graph show the values.
If you have the error message displayed longer than that (and a page refresh has been observed), then I'd have to say there is some problem getting a response back to the WUP request for the data. Credentials are usually the problem at this point, but it could be an SNMP or WMI (depending on what monitor type you are using) communications problem, to that particular computer, too. Check things like the State Change Timeline report and Performance monitor error logs, to get more detailed error information (text messages and numbers, please). Some of these error numbers are mentioned in the Knowledgebase at Ipswitch and Microsoft (very helpful for WMI error information). My guess is you have a couple of monitors confused, but I can see where you have one (performance) that is not working. Focus on that and tell us all you have observed. What is really being monitored and does this monitor work for other devices or using the Test button (if active monitor)? It works on practically all my servers. I have one set of them though where I only get "Samples still being collected." Can anyone give me an idea what I should look for on those servers to enable this to be reported? (I can connect remotely using computer management and see them running, so I don't think it's a rights issue.)
