Another thing to do since email alerts are a lot quicker than modem alerts, you 
could have your modem do the work when the smtp and or the Internet gateway 
goes down.  Then you'll know bigger issues are at hand.

Although I never implemented it, you could wrote a script that modify the SMTP 
server address in the Actions, using a SQL request.

Then fire that script when your SMTP goes down, using a Program Action (it 
would be wise to fire it before your Email Action, just so you don't lose any 
mail).

Of course, you would need a 2nd script which reverse the modification, fired 
when your mail relay goes back up.

I use a modem to send sms over Verizon to all the admins cell-phones,
blackberry's and treo's..

Can you set multiple email servers to send the alerts out?  If our mail
gateway is down, then we never get the alerts.  Can we set a secondary
one to send to if the primary is not working?
