Now, in your case, this won't work as this will only send more data to the browser. The only option I can see here is to either patch Wicket yourself (instead of 'bookmarkablePage', use 'p' for instance, and you could hold a map with keys/ classes somewhere upfront so that you don't need the long names. But that is probably too much work for you?
And... you could mix technologies as well. I know most people don't like doing that (I've had a zillion discussions over mixing Hibernate and plain SQL, of which I think there's not too much wrong with it), but there is no technical constraint in doing that.
Or just go for Niggle/FreeMarker. Or it's compatitor, Velocity and (one of the projects I'm active for), Maverick. I think Maverick is still pretty cool, escpecially if you have to work with XML/XSL etc. But hey, comming from thge FreeMarker camp, you probably loath Velocity. At least that's what Jonathan Revusky does, considering the several flamewars he had on the Velocity mailing lists :).
*If* you think the Javascript alternative could be worth a try, it might be something to put some extra effort in. I'm not sure how hard it is, but I'm pretty sure it can be done. Also, we need to solve feature request 1073170 sometime, which also has to do with support for Javascript.

Just wondering if there are any ways of specifying 'friendly' URLs other than new Servlet definitions?
Background:
'Friendly' in this case can be taken to read 'short', by the way! I'm going to be working in a a demo web-app that might well (a)
include some WML pages to be returned to the user and (b) may have
URL's to be called from a phone, where the excess space for
"/Demo?bookmarkablePage=mywebapp.demo.MainPage" over "/d2" really
makes a difference!
They've traditionally been done via Model 1 JSPs, but I'm quite keen to try to see how I get on with Wicket (and failing that, Barracuda, and failing that Niggle/FreeMarker) rather than JSPs! However, if time pressures become tight, then I might have to go straight to Niggle as I know that, at least!
