When is will you be done with Wicket in Action? ;)
[offtopic]Eelco and Martijn, are you from the netherlands? are you members of got.tweakers.net? Would be great to promote it there : )[/offtopic]

Today, Martijn and I talked about this. We both think it should be really soon. If everyone agrees, we should fix the API before this year, create a branch for 1.0 and move to beta. From there, we could take a few iterations (like b1, b2, r1, r2) and go 1.0. I think we should persue an agressive schedule, and go for, say, March 2005.
New functionality that does not break the API should be in 1.1 and up, and completely new functionality that does break the API should - *if the need is really there* - be in 2.x and up.
New components should be in the - yet to set up - contrib section.
I'll recap this in another mail to this list.

i don't know about spring.
i think you're making a good choice, but do keep in mind that wicket is still alpha software. others in the group may have some clue what release timeframe might be for 1.0... any thoughts guys?

I thing I am convinced, wicket is the way to go, I looked at Echo, struts, webwork and tapestry. And all of those didn't give me what I looked for. But a other thing, can you combine wicket with spring? or won't I need that anymore? Only need to figure out how to use those parallel HTML pages!

layout and presentation in wicket is defined entirely by HTML. this means you do all your layout in wicket using dreamweaver (or whatever design program you like). what wicket adds to dreamweaver is the ability to programmatically manipulate your HTML markup using a first class object model (and for the model to be updated by the browser). if you've never actually seen this approach before, you will probably be sceptical about how it could work out, and it may take a little while to absorb just how powerful and complete such a solution really is... but once you experience the wicket way, i guarantee that you will never want to code the look of a page in java again. and perhaps more importantly, you can get someone really good at design to take responsibility for the look of your site while you concentrate on making it work correctly. and you'll never step on each other's toes. it's hard to believe this is all true because so many approaches to dynamic web sites are so complicated and/or screwed up, but it really IS this easy in wicket. that's the whole point. i encourage you to read the online examples, source examples and available documentation (although it may not be quite 100% up to date). i think you will discover that a huge amount of styling can be accomplished via CSS and that "skinning" (if that's what you're asking about) can be accomplished by creating parallel HTML pages (yes, the more skins and localizations you create, the more files and versioning issues you potentially have... but that's mainly the problem of the graphic artist, which is a good thing).

Hi,
I made a framework in php a time ago (with a lot of improvement for fast development), and am searching for a presentation framework to help me to go to java. After looking at most frameworks, my eye fell on wicket. But I need to know if it will fit my needs. I will help contribute (I can program java) to the presentation framework I choose, thats why I prever something open source.
What I want is a presentation framework I can control from the model.
What I would like is a framework filled with components and layout's. So I can call a layout (say 3 column layout) and set the settings. Add components to it (like table, sorting option, enc). And I want to control where it fetch's its template's ( based on html/xml/enc, different for each client).
Layout layout = New TwoColumnLayout();
// simple menu component
Menu menu = new Menu();
// table component
Table table = new Table();
// make columns
Column column1 = new Column('column1');
Column column2 = new Column('edit');
// make a row to add to table
Row row = new Row()
Vector data = new Data( column1, 'text');
Vector data = new Data( column2, 'new Button( 'edit', link ));
// add data vector to row row.add( data );
// add row to table
table.addRow( row );
table.sort( 'columnname' );
layout.addToColumnOne( menu ); layout.addToColumnTwo( table );
layout.outputtype( 'xml' );
layout.theme( 'template/client5/' ); // where directory is with the xml/html/enc view's for client 5
Want to do the same with form enc. Is something like this possible with wicket? If not with what is this possible? and if this isn't a good idea, why not?
greets,
A. Rahman
