yeah i'm running dreamweaver right now and this code works perfectly:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd";>
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"; xmlns:wicket>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />
<title>Untitled Document</title>
</head>
<body>
<wicket:component name = "foo">test</wicket>
</body>
</html>

it's nice and explicit and namespaced. we would still need the id hack to manipulate standard HTML tags like forms and anchor links, but this would take care of everything else, like labels or rounded tables.

huh? what difference could an id make to rendering?

I'm still thinking about the xhtml thing: <html xmlns:wicket>.
http://www.htmlgoodies.com/tutors/xmlcustomtag.html shows one. Because
it is valid (x)html dreamweaver should support it. I personally like
the <wicket name="componentName" numberOfRows="10"> approach most. As
an alternativ (not replacement) for <span id="wcn-componentName">.
Someone wrote some days before that dreamweaver does not know how to
display the the <wicket> tag. It does not know how to render <span
id="wcn-table"> either.
