i think it's time to start wrapping things up for 1.0. the css discussion has revealed that we're not going to solve the stylesheets problem overnight, let alone the javascript problem. and it would be nice to ship 1.0 RC1 before the end of the month. to do this and not make a mess of our framework's future, i think we need to back off on a lot of RFEs and even features that are partially or largely implemented. yes, it's time to start cutting...
but just so everyone understands what this means... i'm not suggesting that these features/RFEs aren't important! they are! in fact, that's why we need to delay a lot of them. so we can do them real justice. we don't want to rush good things.
anyway, i'd propose we get really self-critical and start code reviewing and trimming back our core/extensions commitments. i think we can start this process by cutting anything to do with javascript, css or hibernate. we only want stuff in core/extensions for 1.0 that doesn't have known problems and doesn't raise obvious questions and all this stuff looks pretty questionable to me right now.
we need time to think and let wicket grow through the good process we've been following.
so i'd suggest that we spend the next couple days pruning back our feature set to just what stands up to close scrutiny. as we cut stuff, it can go into contrib for 1.0 and when it's ready, we'll move it (or something like it) back into core/extensions.
this decision to cut is important from another perspective: we're going to need to focus all our energies to test, debug, document and ship what we've got in the next couple weeks.
in two or three weeks we'll have a polished 1.0 product and we can start playing around with css, javascript and hibernate for 1.1. and we can do it with a feeling of having the time and energy to think things through.
