Hmmmm. There would still be a problem with using visual editors like
dreamweaver etc. So, in that respect there's definitively something to
say for accepting <span id="wicket-myPanel"></span>. We could then
either remove any body or throw an exception when the body is not empty.
What problems would that give?

The point that Maurice makes, it that - as these open/close tags can
give problems when working with CSS - we might reconsider how we do
things for panels and the border's body tag.
Can't we convert the openclose tag to a full open and close tag
ourselves? Like:
<span id="wicket-myPanel"/>
would be - after rendering:
<span id="wicket-myPanel">
<wicket:panel>
.... panel content
</wicket:panel>
</span>
That would be super neat!

I just checked... if you copy/paste the html markup into a local
file, you can see it for yourself. FireFox and IE don't handle the
empty div correctly.
However, this DIV thing is not a bug of wicket. So I think we should
give it lower priority, or have Maurice send in a patch ;-)

right. also, check the code wicket renders to your browser.
there is at least one bug outstanding where wicket is not correctly
closing the open tag.

Where in your examples are the wicket-components ("wicket-...")?
And why don't you use <span id="wicket-myPanel" />. Panels are not
limited to div

Hi,
Currently a Panel requires a div tag that is immediately closed, <div
id="wicket-something" />
Both internet explorer and firefox have a problem with this.
The following example will make things clear:
<html>
<head>
<title>Test</title>
</head>
<body>
<div id="Content" style="background-color:red;">
should be red
<div id="blaat" style="background-color:green;"/>
should be red too
</div>
</body>
</html>
instead of 1 big red block, possibly intersected by a thin green
line, we
get a red block and a green block.
Apparently the browsers miss the /> tag.
<html>
<head>
<title>Test</title>
</head>
<body>
<div id="Content" style="background-color:red;">
should be red
<div id="blaat" style="background-color:green;"/>
should be green
</div> <!-- this is not valid xml since we already closed the div
earlier,
however the browsers need it to get the desired result of a red block
followed by a green block and then another red block -->
should be red
</div>
</body>
</html>
The above example gives the desired effect, but should not be used
because
it is not valid xml.
<html>
<head>
<title>Test</title>
</head>
<body>
<div id="Content" style="background-color:red;">
should be red
<div id="blaat" style="background-color:green;">
should be green
</div>
should be red
</div>
</body>
</html>
The above example is both correct xml and gives the desired effect.
Therefore I would like to propose to change the html tag for
Panels to <div
id="wicket-panelname"></div>
There also might be other components affected by this behaviour.
The w3c furthermore dictates that for div elements a start and end
tag is
required http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/global.html#edef-DIV
and I
don't see them using <div />.
