I checked out a new copy of Wicket as well and build it.
      maven clean jar:install-snapshot
No problem

Same with wicket-extensions and wicket-contrib. Ahh. wicket-extension
does not build because of an error in project.xml (filed already a bug
a couple of days before). It does not work with SNAPSHOTs. You need to
modify the wicket dependency from
        <version>0.9.18-beta</version>
to
      <version>SNAPSHOT</version>

Finally wicket-examples:
maven clean war or maven clean jetty:run-war
No problem. It builds and runs the examples.

Did you use the maven clean. Sometimes it is necessary, depending on
the changes we made.

there is probably a "shorter" way, but "maven dist" builds the whole
distribution including the file you are requesting in
build/distributions
