i think the fisheye directory is a great starting point.  they use
ajax, and even build it using prototype, which is good, since i'm
fairly familiar with it.  here's an example site to test it out:

I browsed the source for just a moment to try and figure out what's
going on, but i'll need to really dig into it to see how it works
later.
