Do you have anything appended to :parallel file? You could try setting debug from 0 to 1 in lapw1para script. It'll provide you some more info where script actually hangs.
If your login shell is tcsh, try running anything (eg. date &) in background and check if it behaves different from lapw1. If your login shell is different from tcsh, run tcsh first, and inside this shell try executing anything in background. > > What C-shell are you using? Starting with this version expressions are (by default) evaluated left-to-right.
