It seems like when transcluded by a template, the <ref></ref> code is
rendered with a new line after it. And, in your article, after the end
</ref> there's a space. So a space at the beginning of a line is
rendered as preformatted text. I'd read that it's a bug of the
extension, but a possible solution to this is to avoid leaving spaces
before </ref>.
