Why not just put AdSense ads on Wikipedia pages to raise money for the
Wikimedia foundation?

Since I'm sure this must have occurred to plenty of people before, by
asking the question I'm really asking: What is the stock answer as to why
Wikipedia doesn't do this :)

One reason I would pre-emptively disagree with though, would be something
like the "corrupting influence of ads" -- I think this is only a problem if
advertisers can influence what you write, which would not be the case with
AdSense. (Jimmy Wales said that when Google Knol let people submit
articles and split the AdSense with Google, too many people would write
about Viagra, but that wouldn't be a problem with Wikipedia if people don't
keep the AdSense revenue from the articles they edit.) Unless I'm missing
something, it seems like not running AdSense ads is just leaving money on
the table, which could help the foundation.

(I may end up collecting information for a Slashdot article that ties in
with Google Knol.)
