I believe the thing you are looking for is , and it
shout be enabled by default and working on Wikia.
At least it was when I tested it on the http://vandal.wikia.com test
wiki before it was deleted.
However it appears to be disabled on CommunityTest (Perhaps the Techs
need to re-enable this in GlobalSettings.php, it is not a bad feature
like it used to be.
For a breakdown of what it does. Quite simply it allows one to change
the title displayed for the page (Without any funky JS, or CSS which
works quite badly in either case).
The feature has been improved and fixed up in MediaWiki 1.12 and is now
enabled by default because the devs now consider it to be a complete and
stable feature.
The current version in MW1.12 doesn't suffer the issues that are part of
the previous releases of MW.
There should be no issues with it working strangely or not working at
times, in the way I believe it used to be unstable.
And it now only works if the title normalizes back, so it's no longer a
dangerous feature in that way.
So, you can't change FooBar into Someothertitle like you used
to. (Which was an issue with the previous versions)
But as for what it's purpose is, it solves an age old MW issue with the
way MW handles first-letter case, and underscores primarily.
It allows for a page like ITunes to use to
make it so that the title displays as iTunes. And because that
normalizes back, it can still be used as a valid link.
Another example that should work, is there is an Animanga series that is
called "_Summer", and yes, the underscore at the start of the name is
part of it, which brings the issue that the title is normalized to
"Summer". So nicely should make the title then
display "_Summer" instead of "Summer".
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes for an example of it used on
Wikipedia.
