The simplest of all formats, other than the trivial internal wiki link format,
is the external wiki link format. When queries produce lists of citations, most
of them are external links.
Right now, it's possible to work around not having an external link format by
doing custom template formatting, but that should be unnecessary for such a
basic format as an external link, especially when internal links already work
by default.
There's a variety of ways to create and use an external link, especially when
icon customization is involved:
