--- Comment #108 from Mark A. Hershberger <[email protected]> 2012-03-23

I'm summarizing your comment here to make sure I understand your issues:

--- BEGIN SUMMARY ---
(In reply to comment #107)
> That report, published nearly five months after the survey closed, was the

> could be used.

The WMF was slow.

> The WMF report preempted any effort that the research team would have
> made,

The report, when it did come out, made others -- who may have been interested
in doing their own research -- feel like it wasn't necessary.

> The volunteer research team was never supplied with the original data
> extractions that were requested from the WMF.

Anyone who still wanted to do any research wasn't given the data.

> The WMF was asked to provide legal, technical (a survey software solution),
> and some math extrapolations. The next thing the volunteer team knew was
> that the WMF had published a complete summary and its interpretation of the
> survey results.

Instead of immediately giving the volunteer team the resources and data they
asked for -- so the volunteers could form their own conclusions -- the WMF went
ahead and published its own opinion.

> The original research team was not involved in any way
> at all with the elaboration of this report and was not invited to
> collaborate on it. Among other reasons, the delays were explained as being
> due to contractors being overworked, lack of funds, and other
> developmental priorities.

The explanation the WMF offered reflected the reality of the limited resources
a non-profit has. Conveniently, from your point of view, this reality allowed
the WMF to publish its opinion without community input.
--- END SUMMARY ---

Is this an accurate representation of the assertions you're making?

How do you reconcile this with Philippe's statement that (in comment #105):

> The WMF wrote a report, but provided the full data to the research team.
> We've offered multiple times to provide any further data requested. Nobody
> has ever requested.

Specifically, you state:

> The volunteer research team was never supplied with the original data
> extractions that were requested from the WMF.

Perhaps they were satisfied with the "full data" that Philippe mentions? (The
difference between this and the "original data extractions" that you mention is
not clear to me.)
