Typing google: in the bar may be useless and nobody tries it (but I don't know,
that's really something we don't have numbers).

More generally though (about interwikis in the search bar), I do know that it
is used extensively (once again, no numbers though).

I think the confusion here is stemming from the fact that (from Search and
Interwiki's perspective) these are the exact same feature. See bug 15274 for
some history.
