I didn't commit my changes to the git repo because I was not sure that my fix was good (it works, but as I don't underdand the original code I don't know why this fix is needed) So the best this to do now is understanding once and for all the original code. According to the blame, Trevor Pascal made this code. Do you have a way to ask him about his code?
