We both agree your option (1) is the preferred option, as it has the smallest behavior change, and still provides a lot of options. Matt will work on a patch, and submit it in the next 8 hours or so, meaning that it's going to be available for us in the European morning. I've communicated with Greg to get us a deployment window in which we can deploy the fix, around Thursday 10:00 UTC. See email for details.
