On bugs, comment 66 says it all. Some bugs you mention are actually features,
and some features you mention of the default RC are actually bugs; more above.

This is true only on biggest wikis.

By this reasoning we should never even try to make default settings saner.

I never saw them, what are you talking of? The information is the same.

I sometimes use enhanced RC without JS and I think they make sense, grouping is
very useful; those who disagree can change the settings, only a minuscule
minority (in which I'm included ;) ) disables JavaScript and they surely know
what consequences that has.

This is a bug.
