Nemo is correct here, I think. 

Mobile used this CTA, and it got a lot of new people to sign up and use the
watchlist. Not many of these people became contributors. Note that they also
made the choice to have the default view be the raw list of watched pages, not
the list of recent edits, so it looks like a bookmarking tool to many readers.
That choice probably had a big part to play in the end result. 

Now, this isn't really net negative, if readers repeatedly come back to their
watchlist and get value out of it, even if they don't edit. But on the Growth
team, our goal is to increase the number of active editors, so I'd like to use
this same technique with more high-value calls to action.

TL;DR: sure we should try this at some point, but it's not a priority right
now, because so far it looks like the results are that it gets readers to sign
up, try the watchlist, and then not do much else.
