There is an issue in Chrome when using the VisualEditor extension. The
dropdowns in the VE toolbar seem to be opening "under" the content area, hiding
their contents.
The problem is a bug in the jQuery 1.8 lib used in MW <1.24 (or a variation
thereof): http://bugs.jquery.com/ticket/11635
Todo: Backport the fix in jQuery 1.11.
