My first edit was to create a new article (in 2007). I had made some minor
edits as an IP before that, correcting typos and such, but I was forced to
register to create my article (i.e. Wikipedia is already not an encyclopedia
where anyone can create an article). Had I been forced to wait 4 days and make
10 edits, I can say with confidence that it would not have deterred me. I had
done my research and I knew that the article I wanted to create passed the
notability bar and had plenty of verifiable sources. I was going to create it
regardless of the hurdles I would have to jump through. On the other hand, if
my plan was to create an article which consists of "My buddy John is cool, he
likes bicycles and has red hair" then I probably wouldn't have bothered to wait
the 4 days. My point is I agree with Blade (comment 39). We can do just fine
without 72% of the articles that non-autonconfirmed users are creating
currently.

I can honestly say that had I been forced to become autoconfirmed first, I
probably would have been annoyed, but only because I wouldn't have been warned
ahead of time. If I had gotten plenty of warnings while editing as an IP that
I would eventually need to become autoconfirmed before I'd be able to create
new articles, then I probably would have registered a lot sooner and made my
minor lurking edits as a registered editor.

So perhaps one thing we should concentrate on is being more proactive about
warning IP editors that not only will they need to register to create new
articles, but they'll need to make 10 edits over 4 days while registered.
Perhaps we can add this warning to [[Mediawiki:Nocreatetext]] and even the
anonymous editnotice, so that every time an IP editor makes an edit, they're
reminded of the restrictions on their editing and given an incentive to edit as
a registered user (e.g. "Here are the added benefits of registering:"). The
more advance notice we give anonymous editors will make it less of a surprise
and make them less annoyed when they realize they need to become autoconfirmed.
