Why not do something like this?
INSERT INTO sequence_table ('sequence_name', 'sequence_value') VALUES (?, 1) ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE sequence_value = LAST_INSERT_ID(sequence_value + 1); SELECT LAST_INSERT_ID();
Wouldn't that at least reduce the time to hold a lock while still being atomic?
