No, it uses the template, which is documented at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikidata_Query_Service/User_Manual/MWAPI#Individual_service_configuration and https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikidata_Query_Service/User_Manual/mwapi.json
I assumed that this part of the documentation was only relevant to people who want to set up MWAPI on their own query service installations – after all, as a user of query.wikidata.org, I can’t modify this configuration.
You cannot send the query "unmodified", because there's no initial query to "unmodify" - the query is assembled from template and additional parameters.
Okay, sure, I can rephrase my assumption to “there are no additional parameters” if it wasn’t clear…
[wikibase_item is] only missing if &ppprop=page_image_free is explicitly specified, at least as far as I can tell.
No, if ppprop=page_image_free is specified it is not missing.
When I specify &ppprop=page_image_free, then wikibase_item is missing.
Of course, because you didn't specify it. If you want both, you need to specify both.
I feel like we’re going in circles here :D I thought you were saying that if ppprop=page_image_free is specified, then wikibase_item is not missing, but I guess you meant something else.
