I *think* the stats.wikimedia.org "authors" count is a cumulative total of all authors who've ever made an edit - note that it goes up steadily every month, and the "new" number + total from the previous month = current month. You can see the same thing here:
http://stats.wikimedia.org/EN/TablesWikipediaEN.htm The Special:Statistics list is the total of people who've made an edit in the past 30 days. Andrew.
