Yes, I see it now. Stats also has a table for current numbers further
down, labelled "Monthly counts for recent history of wiki". This table
does indeed show contributor numbers below 14k for all months up to Nov
2014. Overall, the two counts seem to agree though :-)

shows around 5k active users (=users with >5 edits) each month, but more
than 18K users with an edit in November 2014 (so 14k would maybe not be a
great thing ;-).
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:Statistics is what I am tracking. That
has not been over 14000 before. And yeah that does not match
stats.wikimedia.org for whatever reason...
