Hi Erik WE has naturally outgrown its first phase of hosting -- and BIG thanks from ALL of us in getting what was small project with one registered user in Feb 2006 to the point where we're getting just under 5000 visitors a day! COL is in the process of investigating Phase 2 hosting solutions and its appropriate that we discuss this as a community.
BTW -- to date I don't think the WE community has made a public announcement congratulating you on your appointment as Deputy Director. WMF are very fortunate to have your caliber of your expertise -- (as we are in having access to your advice on the WE advisory board :-) ). I should also mention that Erik's hosting services were provided at rates well below commercial hosting rates. Also, I want to thank Erik publically on behalf of the Commonwealth for the many hours of maintenance and upgrading he has provided WE as a volunteer without charge. BIG thank you Erik -- and you're not even a member of the Commonwealth <smile>. Basically there are two options for the next phase of hosting: 1) COL goes to tender with for an external hosting company to provide the services we require. 2) We look for a community-based solution where volunteers assist with maintenance and installation of the WE servers (COL will cover the costs of leasing the servers and we can explore creative solutions to assist with some of the costs.) My personal preference is for option 2 -- I'm sure that there are many education institutions that have resident expertise that can assist in this regard. Community projects are more successful when they are "owned" and run by the community.
