Hi Leigh,
yes, they did push by the prompt (as I said, no big deal, I had a
backup). Now, given that I plan to continue leading groups of 20 or
more students into Wikieducator each year, and we also attract scores
of other new users, pushing past that prompt is likely to be happen on
occasion. I have emphasized with all of my students that they can do
no harm, and we have the history, and the undo functions. However,
this seems to be the first very real chink in the armor. Any of us
can easily overwrite an image and there is no recourse.
To me, the beauty of wiki educator (and other wikis) is that you can
put it down and walk away and reasonably expect to be able to retrieve
data without resort to individual backup. People may contribute,
and then move jobs, crash computers etc. Central backup is
essential. It took quite a bit of work to copy all of the content I
had on wikia over here, and thankfully I left the data also on wikia,
so I had a backup of that particular image. However, I lack the time
and resources to individually backup the files uploaded by 36 new
users. So I see the image overwrite issue as a real problem.
Possible solutions:
1. Limit overwriting of images to original user
2. keep the original file in the history just like all of the other
content
3. hope that the sky is not really fallling; this problem is rare;
