Judy said to say thanks to the WE folks who have contacted her about reviewing open textbooks. She was delighted to get such a quick response from my posting here! I'm pleasantly surprised as well as enormously proud of my WE colleagues for stepping up.
Having spent time over the last couple of weeks reviewing the open textbook initiatives and reviewing articles about adoption (or lack thereof), it is clear that reducing the conversations to the "simplest" form - Open Textbooks is necessary to get any real traction with adoption of Open Educational Resources (OERs). Faculty and students "get" the idea of an online / open / free textbook. So that makes it a good simple model to start with. The textbook model provides some assurances that "someone" has decided that is good enough to use as a basis for teaching and learning. Now all we need is to provide the functional equivalent of those assurances for Open Textbooks (and ultimately, other OERs). It turns out this is a really complex issue, so any bright ideas on this front would extremely helpful. This is one of the great break-throughs needed before we see wide-spread adoption. Faculty and institutions just aren't willing to rely on consumer educational materials on the web - yet. This is pretty bizarre when you think about it - the internet was created to share academic information with trusted colleagues in a closed environment. But there is the whole issue of trust - who can you trust on the web these days. The CCOER Open Textbook reviews are a start. So thanks to everyone who has offered to help move this along by offering to review these textbooks.
