I think it's really nice to see all the experimentation, especially
when it's done so well. But is there any way we might find some
agreement with some other communities about which tools are the most
common? I've made some notes on wayne's thread about Working Groups
which, in brief, talks about approaching other communities, like
wikipedia, to see if there are some common (working) groups that might
like to share a space rather than promoting similar initiatives from
two silos.
You got me very worried when you say "nothing on the internet is
permanent". I guess you mean the applications which operate by http
and sit on the internet's top layer. And which you identify by a brand
like ning, orkut, elgg, jive, grou.ps, ad infinitum.

Is there a chance we could be a bit analytic, and agree on which
features (functions) are important to WE's (and maybe WMF's)
communities. Just so we can compare. My interest is in getting the
real time tools, which might be useful as complements to the web
stuff, innovated and automated. That means explaining to .edu
engineers, who are accustomed to tweaking IP for institutions, that
there really are dymanic global communities getting together out there
who have a spec in mind. They just don't speak geek, or want to.
Don't get me wrong. I like all sorts of tools. But they're just tools.
They're means to ends and IT is a fashion like any other. I just don't
want to be running from iceberg to iceberg forever. regards, simon
