Hi Gene,

You're certainly not slow -- you're right up there with social software by
virtue of your participation in WIkiEducator :-)

There are a number of social networking sites -- each with a particular
niche or focus, for example:

* http://delicious.com/ is a social bookmarking site. Rather than storing
your favourite websites locally on your machine -- you can share these with
the world. It gets interesting because users on the site will get to know
your interests, and you will get to know others and you can "share"
bookmarks. You can also add your own descriptive tags for the things that
interest you and search for bookmarks where users have applied the same tag
- -for example a search for the tag "OER" produces these results:
http://delicious.com/tag/OER
* Sites like http://identi.ca/ and http://twitter.com/ are micro blogging
sites - -where people post what they're doing or thinking in 140 characters.
Again social communities evolve online and you can follow friends and people
with similar interest -- its a great way to keep up to speed with what is
happening around the world :-).

There are many more -- but you should get the idea. The best to learn, is to
create an account and started discovering this amazing world of people
connecting virtually.

So the social networking button on WikiEducator is there to make it easier
for users to use our page urls in their social networks. Assuming you have
an account on Delicious or identi.ca and you wanted to bookmark a
WikiEducator page -- or post a short message on identica about an
interesting page you found WikiEducator -- all you need to do is click on
the social bookmarking button on WIkiEducator and it will automatically load
the url address of that page and redirect you to your Delicious or
identi.caaccount. Assuming you're logged in -- the url will magically
appear in
context saving you time and energy to post more bookmarks :-)

There many good websites explaining how this all works and tips for learning
how to use social networking sites productively.

Have fun exploring.

Cheers
Wayne
