Free-range Learning: South/South
Innovations.<http://openingscholarship.uct.ac.za/2012/03/free-range-learning-southsouth-innovations/>

Pamela Ryan, at present Executive Director to the Pro Vice Chancellor at
the University of South Africa (Unisa) and founding anchor partner of the
OER Tertiary Education Network cites OERu as an example of South/South
innovation.

Expanding on Jim Taylor's pedagogy of discovery, Pam illustrates the
concept of "free range learning" and its potential for the OERu network:

*"[T]he idea of free-range learning caught my attention. Playing on the
idea of open learning as unconfined and not fenced in, free-range learning
has an immediate appeal. Students, like chickens, can forage freely for
delicious worms (of knowledge), scratch happily in the dirt (internet) and
dig up whatever precious nuggets they can find.*

*Chickens, I have learnt, are very social creatures with a complex
language. They talk to each other in various tones and registers,
excitedly, alarmingly and soothingly (when there are chicks around). They
hate being alone and follow each other round the terrain in collegial
groups. Students should be encouraged to observe chickens at work and play.
They would learn valuable social lessons that would stand them in good
stead for self-directed learning and social networking practices."*
