Hi Derek,

Great question. The purpose this prototype is to trial a few technology
related issues.
SP4Ed<http://wikieducator.org/Scenario_planning_for_educators/Home>will
be the first New Zealand micro Open Online Course (mOOC) to be offered
in "parallel mode" with an official postgraduate course from a Kiwi uni.

In OER university lingua - parallel mode means free OERu students learning
in parallel with full-tuition students registered for a university course.
Micro means a subcomponent of a university course. In this case SP4Ed is a
subcomponent of EDEM630 (Change with Digital Technologies in Education) at
the University of Canterbury.

>From a technology perspective:

   - The OERu version will run without an LMS (interaction technologies are
distributed across the Internet -- in short, a PLE approach) We ran an
SP4Ed prototype in May this year.
   - The University of Canterbury students will follow the course through
the institutional learning management system (in this case Moodle)

You'll appreciate a few of the technical challenges, for example:

   - How do we share SP4Ed posts from Ucan students using Moodle with the
   free OERu learners?
   - How will the free OERu learners get to see Moodle posts because they
wont have authenticated access to see the Moodle forum posts.
   - How will the Ucan students get to see all the PLE interactions from
   the OERu students?
   - How do we share the e-learning course materials across these
   platforms.

This is what we're prototyping with SP4Ed 2013.07 -- a live parallel mode
example to help us refine some of the technologies for the future of mOOCs
for the OERu collaboration so our anchor partners can teach in parallel
mode.
