Hi Sylvain, no matter what the prize is, there will be people who like it more than others. You are of course right that our target audience is broader than just regular Wikimedians. The idea of the scholarship is that the winner can "present" the winning photo at Wikimania, and of course besides that it is a nice trip to Washington. Advantage is that Washington is relatively speaking just as far for any country in Europe. And similarly expensive.
To be clear, we're talking about a full scholarship, including travel, conference fee and stay. Also, if the first prize winner really doesn't like it, he can choose between the offered prizes, the second winner gets second choice etc. It would be really great if we get a few more prizes to choose from so that everybody gets something they really like.
