Hi,

The latest technical newsletter is now available at <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News/2017/10>.
Below is the English version.

You can help write the next newsletter: whenever you see information about
Wikimedia technology that you think should be distributed more broadly, you
can add it to the next newsletter at <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News/Next>.

More information on how to contribute is available at <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News#contribute>. You can also contact
me directly.

As always, feedback (on- or off-list) is appreciated and encouraged.

Latest *tech news
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News>* from the
Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes.
Not all changes will affect you. Translations

available.

*Recent changes*

   - You can now search on English, French, Hebrew and Greek wikis and find
   words even if you forget the diacritics
   <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/diacritics>. It also works if you use
   diacritics in your search but the wiki doesn't. [1]
   <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T155515>
   - When you use the mobile view and click on a link to an article in
   another language you will see that article in the mobile view. Previously
   it changed to the desktop view. [2]

*Problems*

   - Some watchlist gadgets didn't work for a period of time last week.
   This has now been fixed. [3]
   <https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2017-March/date.html>
   - Admins who click on "mass delete" on a user's Special:Contributions
   <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions> will be taken
   directly to a list pages created by that user. It has worked like this
   before, but not lately. [4] <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T158502>

*Changes this week*

   - The way you switch between wikitext and the visual editors in the
   desktop view has changed. It is now a drop-down menu. This is the same as
   in the mobile view. [5] <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T116417>
   - The "flag the edit in the abuse log" checkbox will be removed
from the abuse
   filter
   <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Extension:AbuseFilter>
interface.
   This is because the edits are always flagged in the abuse log. [6]
   <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T154091>
   - [image: Octicons-sync.svg] The new version
   <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.29/wmf.14> of MediaWiki will
   be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 March. It will be on
   non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 March. It will be on all
   wikis from 9 March (calendar
   <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.29/Roadmap>).

*Meetings*

   - [image: Octicons-sync.svg] You can join the next meeting with the
   VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs
   you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 7 March at
   20:00 (UTC)

<http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?hour=20&min=00&sec=0&day=07&month=03&year=2017>.
   See how to join
   <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/VisualEditor/Weekly_triage_meetings>.

*Clarification*

   - The 2017/09 issue of Tech News
   <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News/2017/09> mentioned 3D file
   formats you can soon upload to Commons. The AMF
   <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Additive_Manufacturing_File_Format> format
   will be available later.
