Hi,

The latest technical newsletter is now available at <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News/2018/08>.
Below is the English version.

You can help write the next newsletter: whenever you see information about
Wikimedia technology that you think should be distributed more broadly, you
can add it to the next newsletter at <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News/Next>.

More information on how to contribute is available at <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News#contribute>. You can also contact
me directly.

As always, feedback (on- or off-list) is appreciated and encouraged.

Latest *tech news
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News>* from the
Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes.
Not all changes will affect you. Translations
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News/2018/09> are
available.

*Recent changes*

   - Checkusers and stewards can now view private data such as the IP
address in the abuse log. This data is removed regularly. [1]

*Problems*

   - Last week's MediaWiki version was rolled back because of a bug. [2]
   <https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2018-February/089550.html>
   [3] <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T187942>
   - Since the deployment train last week until late evening on 20 February
   UTC <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:Coordinated_Universal_Time>, when
you thanked someone for an edit, the thank went to the latest unthanked
edit to that page. It didn't matter which edit you tried to give thanks
for. This has been fixed. [4] <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T187757>
   - Special:Statistics <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Statistics>
did not take newly created pages into account since 13 February 2018.
Because of this the statistics are recreated. [5]

*Changes later this week*

   - Users with version 10 of the Internet Explorer browser will no longer
get JavaScript on Wikimedia wikis. If you use this browser on your
computer, you can try upgrading to a newer version. [8]
   <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T187869>
   - [image: Advanced item] The Wikinews wikis will switch to use the Remex
parsing library <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/RemexHtml>. This is to
   replace Tidy <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Parsing/Replacing_Tidy>. It
will happen on 27 February. Other wikis will be recommended to switch soon
when they have fixed the errors that must be fixed. Tidy will be removed in
   the middle of 2018. [9] <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T188000>[10]

   wikis from 1 March (calendar
   <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.31/Roadmap>).
