Hi,

The latest technical newsletter is now available at <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News/2018/10>.
Below is the English version.

You can help write the next newsletter: whenever you see information about
Wikimedia technology that you think should be distributed more broadly, you
can add it to the next newsletter at <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News/Next>.

More information on how to contribute is available at <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News#contribute>. You can also contact
me directly.

As always, feedback (on- or off-list) is appreciated and encouraged.

Latest *tech news
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News>* from the
Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes.
Not all changes will affect you. Translations
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News/2018/10> are
available.

*Recent changes*

   - You can now make longer edit summaries. [1]
   <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T6715>

*Changes later this week*

   - You can notify users in edit summaries

<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Tech/Ping_users_from_the_edit_summary>.
   They will get a ping just as if they had been mentioned on a wiki page.
   [2] <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T32750>
   - On Special:AbuseLog <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:AbuseLog> you
   can now choose to list only actions that actually made an edit. Other
   actions are when the filter warned the editor or blocked the edit from
   being made. There are also more search options. [3]

   - [image: Advanced item] Wikis can enable Citoid

<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Citoid/Enabling_Citoid_on_your_wiki>
    to provide automatic reference look-up in the visual editor and the
   2017 wikitext editor, but it is complex. The tool will now warn in the
   JavaScript console if the configuration isn't correct. Soon Citoid will
   disable itself if the configuration isn't correct. Check that your wiki is
   configured correctly. You can ask for help
   <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Citoid/Enabling_Citoid_on_your_wiki>
    if you need it. [5] <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T186276>
   - [image: Recurrent item] The new version
   <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.31/wmf.24> of MediaWiki will
   be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 March. It will be on
   non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 March. It will be on all
   wikis from 8 March (calendar
   <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.31/Roadmap>).

*Meetings*

   - [image: Recurrent item] You can join the next meeting with the Editing
   team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are
   the most important. The meeting will be on 6 March at 19:30 (UTC)

<https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?hour=19&min=30&sec=0&year=2018&month=03&day=06>.
   See how to join
   <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Editing_team/Weekly_triage_meetings>.
   - [image: Advanced item] You can join the technical advice meeting on
   IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The
   meeting will be on 7 March at 16:00 (UTC)

<http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?hour=16&min=00&sec=0&day=07&month=03&year=2018>.
   See how to join
   <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Technical_Advice_IRC_Meeting>.

*Future changes*

   - In the future you will be able to use global preferences. This means
   you could change a preference for all wikis instead of having to change it
   every time for each wiki. You can now test global preferences
   <https://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Special:GlobalPreferences>
   and give feedback
   <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help_talk:Extension:GlobalPreferences>.
   - You can now read about planned works on maps
   <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Map_improvements_2018>
    during 2018. This will be done by June. You can give feedback
   <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Map_improvements_2018> on the
   planned maps work.
