On most projects I'm working on, even ones with long histories, the git repo is around the same size as a checkout and on many it s smaller. Of course, you'll also need a checkout in order to do useful work with it, but doubling the storage isn't usually a big deal. If you're the sort of person who does development using a whole lot of separate local trees git can use the same storage to provide history for all of them, even when the trees are partially divergent.
