I use StartSSL myself, but they don't offer wildcard certificates for 
free.  Using non-wildcard certs would require us to request (and 
regularly renew) around 1,000 certs, as well as requiring a new cert for 
each new language project which opens.

StartSSL wildcard certs might be cheaper than another provider (it's not 
very clear from their website), but either way there's a cost involved.
