I think the bug is sufficiently killed at this point, so I wanted to add my $.02 here instead of there.
As hoo mentioned on the bug, there have been some gadgets that have opened up some serious security and performance issues, so I can sympathize with Jared wishing they didn't exist at times. But without them, we would get even worse stuff hacked into Common.js. So I think we need to focus on the desired process so useful gadgets can safely be set as default. Do any of the communities have formal policies on how code should be formalized into a gadget, and a process for setting that gadget as a default? There seems to be some inferred policy from Wikipedia:Gadget, but I'm not finding a specific policy on it.
