I ran scandisk from XpPe and it found/fixed everything (apparently).
It now boots fine and runs apps OK, too.
I still can't see why it blasted away the files and why I couldn't write to
the drive. All I could see (using XpPe's explorer) on the drive C: was that
BDElog.txt file. After running XpPe's scandisk I got everything to boot just
like something had hidden all the directories and files and made the C:
drive Read-Only.

I found a few Ad-Ware nuisances and am now re-running the virus-scanner. My
son wanted to make a trip to town and I didn't finish the first virus scan.
If I find a guilty program I'll post it for you.

Thanks for the help.

BDElog.txt is one of the spyware files from Brilliant Digital Entertainment.
Based on what I've seen from most users, I suspect the system is infested
with spyware, malware, trojans, viruses .... you name it.

Boot from the CD and see if it detects a Windows installation, and if so,
what the drive letter is. You might be able to get it up by running a Repair
on the current installation. If you take that route, expect to have to
reinstall most (if not all) other applications. Have you tried booting from
the CD and running the Recovery Console to poke around and see what you can
find?
