Ah, but what do "they" know about much of anything. :-) I can't imagine why
monitoring is a (necessary) factor in a later backup unless, somehow, they are
trying to do on-the-fly incremental backups which, as you mention, requires 
care.

A very helpful/interested member of http://www.geekstogo.com/ asked Kaspersky if
they knew of the Ghost conflict. Within a few days an upgrade was posted to 
KAV5:
http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/productupdates?chapter=146244099 to resolve the Ghost
shutdown problem. I'm currently downloading the upgrade now. I'll keep you 
posted.
