Hi Steve,
Reading between the lines, I would guess at a mainboard failure. If
you have another system, I would start testing the individual
components.
As far as the HDD light is concerned pull the data cable and power up.
You should hear the HDD spin up. If the machine tries to boot then
the HDD is suspect.
